Nativity scene detail

In Spain, small nativity scenes, known as ‘Belén’ (Bethlehem in English) have always been more common and popular in households and churches compared to Christmas trees.

During the Christmas festivities in Madrid, one of the best options is to visit the nativity scenes in various churches, and the best part is that most of these visits are free of charge. Each nativity scene is made with love and is often a work of art, with a unique theme and something special to offer every year.

Here are a few of our favorite nativity scenes in Madrid:

The Royal Palace Nativity scene: This is the biggest of all, coming from the 18th century Naples and once owned by the kings of Spain. Each year, a special entrance is set up for free access to the Madrid Royal Palace´s Nativity Scene.

City Hall Centro Centro Nativity Scene: A major attraction, this nativity scene is entirely handmade!

Spanish Turrón

Eating delicious Spanish pastries during Christmas is an absolute necessity. In Spain, every region has its unique holiday sweets, but there are also those beloved “classics” that are a staple on every Christmas table. You can buy them in supermarkets, grocery stores, bars, restaurants, and from street vendors.

Turrón: This sweet treat, with Moorish origins, reigns as the king of the Spanish Christmas season. While there are many versions of turrón, the basic one is mainly made of almonds, honey, and egg.

Marzipan: another traditional Christmas pastry made of almonds, with the most famous being the Marzipan made in Toledo, with a history dating back to the 16th century.

Polvorón and Mantecado: These typical Spanish Christmas pastries have their origins in the Andalucia region.

Rosco de Vino: A kind of cookie that is characterized by its use of sweet wine and nuts. The powdered sugar on top gives it a “snowy” appearance.

Roscón de Reyes: It is a bagel-shaped and brioche-like sweet with usually sugar or nuts on the top and sometimes filled with cream. The tradition involves hiding a small figurine (baby Jesus, a bean, or a coin) inside. The person who discovers the hidden item is expected to host the Roscón next year.

When it comes to beverages, during the Christmas season in Madrid, you’ll commonly find: Cava (Spanish Champagne), along with a variety of wines (with red wine being a popular choice), Anís (a local alcoholic drink flavoured with anise, which pairs wonderfully with Christmas pastries), sidra (apple cider).

Christmas lottery game

The 22nd of December is always a significant event in Spain. At 9:00 am, the entire country tunes in to the radio or national TV channel to await the drawing of the “El Gordo” Christmas lottery numbers in a grand and highly anticipated ceremony. People often purchase these lottery tickets months in advance, and you’ll witness long lines all around the city right up until the last minute before the drawing. This enthusiasm for lottery games is not surprising, as the average Spanish person spends around 600€ per year on various lottery games.

If you’re fortunate enough to have the full winning number, the prize can be as much as 4 million euros. These lottery tickets can be found and purchased in kiosks, stores, bars, restaurants, and even the smallest village shops or local hairdressers.

The beauty of this tradition is that it’s open to everyone, both Spanish residents and foreigners alike.

Our favourite ice skating places in Madrid are:

Plaza de España Ice Rink: This ice skating rink is located right next to the largest Christmas market in Madrid and the city’s only authentic Christmas tree. It’s open from 12 pm to 10 pm and costs approximately 10€.

On New Year’s Eve in Spain, you can take part in one of the country’s most famous traditions! As the year ends, everyone grabs a small basket with 12 grapes inside (available at the supermarkets). When the clock strikes midnight and the 12 bells chime, the goal is to eat all 12 grapes within those 12 seconds. This tradition is believed to bring good luck for the coming year.

Many people take part in this grape-eating ritual wherever they happen to be at midnight, but it’s especially popular at home or at the heart of this tradition: Puerta del Sol, where thousands of people gather to celebrate New Year’s Eve together.

For an extra dose of tradition and good luck, it’s a custom to wear red underwear. So remember, all you need for this unique Spanish New Year’s tradition is 12 grapes and a pair of red underpants.

In Spain, children traditionally receive their Christmas presents on the morning of January 6th, a practice rooted in the cultural and historical significance of “Three Kings’ Day” (Dia de los Reyes) celebrating the visit of the Three Wise Men to the baby Jesus. On the night of January 5th, Spanish children eagerly await the arrival of the Wise Men, who are believed to bring gifts on their camels.

Many cities, including Madrid, organize grand parades to welcome the ‘Reyes’, a highlight of the holiday season.

In Madrid, the Grand Parade begins normally at 6:30 p.m. and follows a consistent route through the city, creating a magical and festive atmosphere until around 9 p.m. The itinerary is always the same in Madrid: Paseo de Castellana-Plaza Colón-Paseo de Recoletos-Plaza de Cibeles.

It’s a magical and festive event that adds to the excitement and wonder of the Christmas season in Spain.

Today in Madrid you can find many ceramics schools where you can join one or multiple classes and learn more about this art.

Here is a list of the best ceramics and pottery classes in Madrid so you can easily organize a lovely activity for you or your friends.

Let’s start from the official pottery schools in Madrid. If you are looking for deep knowledge in ceramics, this is your place. At these schools, located one in front of the other, normally you can choose between long term courses- which last 2 years and give you an official title (such as artistic ceramic master, potter or sculptor) and professional workshops. These schools are for people who would like to form as ceramists. They are located in a beautiful place at Moncloa neighborhood.

You can find more information about these schools in Spanish here.

Family-Friendly Activities and Attractions: Top things to do in Madrid with kids

Visiting Madrid with kids is a wonderful idea as the Spanish capital with its combination of culture, outdoor spaces, and fun experiences has lots to offer for everyone in the family.

Museums, parks, zoos, and amusement parks are just a small part of Madrid´s best activities

Madrid is also one of the greenest capitals in Europe, adding to the relaxation and enjoyment of your stay. Plus, there are plenty of child-friendly activities available at little to no cost, making it more affordable than most major cities.

Now let’s see the best things to do in Madrid with kids. This is a list created by Linda, our expert guide for children in Madrid.

1. The Hop On bus with treasure hunt

This bus ride is a fun way for an introductory tour of Madrid and get yourself familiarized with the city and its monuments. Children love the idea of hopping on and off the bus and discovering the sights they find during the stops.

How about waking up their interest by printing the 10 most important things to see in Madrid (maybe with pictures) so they can do a treasure hunt during your ride?

2. Visit a Zoo (choose the most suitable for you)

The Prado Museum is the most important museum in Spain. Some parents would think that their children cannot stand museums with paintings but the Prado is really unique. There are so many great stories and legends waiting for the youngest travelers.

It is great to develop children’s love for art from a very young age. We would definitely recommend you a private tour adapted to your family’s needs, which will become an unforgettable memory for your little ones. We are happy to note that many families wrote to us that their children loved the Prado more than the amusement park. Can there be a better review?

5. Visit the Rastro flea market (and look for antique toys)

As a very old tradition every Sunday a big flea market is organized in Madrid´s La Latina neighborhood. It is a perfect occasion to buy souvenirs or antique items, stroll around one of Madrid´s most picturesque district, feel the city´s energy and try tapas at one of its amazing tabernas such as Taberna Txacolí or El Viajero.

6. Enjoy a meal at a themed restaurant

A great option for lunch or dinner is to visit a themed and family friendly restaurant. In Madrid, more and more fantastic places are opening up, perfect for kids.

Wonderland

The decor here is inspired by Alice in Wonderland, though the dishes they serve are primarily of Asian origin.

La Cerda

With adorable pig-themed decor throughout, it’s no surprise that pork is the star ingredient on the menu.

7. Visit a park (and a playground)

Madrid is one of the greenest capitals in the world with so many parks but let’s have a closer look at the most interesting ones for children.

Retiro

It is a must. It is the Central Park of Madrid and it is located in the center of the city so it is easy to reach. It is a historical park with many interesting sights for children: a lake where you can ride a boat, a Chrystal palace with a small pound with ducks and turtles, playgrounds and more.

Parque del Capricho

This romantic park is probably the most unique of all parks in Madrid, but unfortunately it is only open on weekends. It is full of precious corners; small cascades, sculptures, chapels, a palace, a labyrinth and there is even a totally conserved bunker from the Civil War which can be explored (always with an organized tour). Children love discovering all these hidden gems of the park. Please note that there are no playgrounds in this place. It is easy to reach it by metro (Alameda de Osuna station).

Madrid Río

This is a truly fantastic place in Madrid for children. It is a long park which follows Madrid´s river. It is quite new and you can find 17 playgrounds all over it adapted to all ages and interests such as a wooden pirate boat, different slides, climbing walls, bridges and other amusements. Absolutely recommended! One of the best ways of discovering it is by renting a bike.

Parque de Europa

Perhaps the most interesting park in Madrid if you are travelling with children.

It is a place where you can find recreations of Europe’s most famous monuments such as the Eiffel tower, the Dutch windmills or the London Bridge. The entrance is free but they charge for the different activities they have: ziplines, playgrounds, pony riding, trampolines, children train, archery, quadricycles and many more.

The only problem is that it is slightly off the beaten track. It is a 30-minute drive but by public transport it takes an hour (a train from Atocha to Torrejon de Ardoz and then a bus)

8. Dipping churros into hot chocolate

Eating Chocolate con churros is one of the best things to do in Madrid with kids. If you wish to try them, we would recommend you the oldest chocolate store called Chocolatería San Gines. Children absolutely love this dessert, and also the fun way of eating them (by dipping the thin churros into the thick dark chocolate). You will see that many locals prefer ‘porras’ to churros (it is the churros’ big brother) and it is much more tricky to dip it because of its big size. Just make sure your children aren’t wearing a white t-shirt that day .

8. Visit the Royal Palace and Armoury

A must see in Madrid for children is the Royal Palace. It is even more interesting if you visit it on a Wednesday (the first Wednesday of the month) as in the morning you are able to see the big changing of the guards (there are smaller changes every Wednesday and Saturday at 12:00PM). Inside the palace children love to discover all the sumptuous halls, the portraits of the royals, the Spanish Crown and the Throne room. It is a nice and educative plan for children in Madrid.

The museum of Royal Armoury with its collection of historic swards, armours, horse armours is included in the entrance fee.

We have children-friendly guides and adapted to their ages private tours to the Royal Palace. Your family will get to now more about the actual King and Queen, learn from what the Spanish Crown is made of and its weight and also why the King would never wear it, see where the Royals have their supper and much more interesting facts.

9. Go to a flamenco show

Visiting a theater is a fun way to spend time with children in Madrid during your vacations. The flamenco dance with all the colorful dresses of the dancers, the sound of the guitars, the rhythm and the energy of the show is an incredible experience for the whole family. It is recommended especially for children from 5-7 years. There are some shows which last 45 minutes long, which are more suitable for your children’s attention span.

10. Visit a Child-friendly Museum in Madrid

Aside from the Prado there are other museums in Madrid, which are great to visit with children. These are our favorite ones:

Navy Museum

The Museo Naval is a fantastic museum both for children and adults and it is “hidden” almost next to the Prado Museum. You will find models of boats and ships, original flags, maps and many other interesting items related to the Spanish navigation (remember that it was in Spain together with Portugal that there were the biggest discoverers of the 16th century). Learn the history of such important historical Spanish moments such as the Discovery of America or the Trafalgar War. Children normally adore walking through all those boat models. Unfortunately, in this museum no English explanations are available as it is not the typical “tourist spot”. Consider a private guided tour for this!

Visit the Moncloa viewpoint and the America Museum

Just in front of the Moncloa viewpoint (very recommended to see because of the unusual views of the city) you can find the America Museum. It is a building which recreates the Spanish colonial style in South America. In this place you can learn about America´s discovery and colonization and see original artifacts from the native cultures in both North and South America. Its main treasure is one of the four Prehispanic Mayas codes known in the world. Unfortunately, everything is in Spanish as well, so if you are interested in this museum, we would recommend a private tour guide.

Archeological Museum

The National Archeological Museum is an excellent museum right in the center of Madrid where children can really enjoy themselves. It shows the human presence in “Spain” –the Iberian half island. It was transformed recently and now you can easily get to know the Spanish history with the help of modern technology and enjoy the new galleries in this historical building. Everything is translated to English.

Train Museum

It is a lovely small museum located in a nice building where you can see old trains and you can even go inside some of them. For instance, children usually enjoy taking a rest in a coffee shop which is located in one of the trains. This museum is just perfect if you combine it with a walk in Madrid Rio Park (a 15 minute-walk) and discover Madrid´s river and its 17 playgrounds. From spring to autumn, you can take an historical train from this museum which takes you to the Palace of Aranjuez (30 minutes away from Madrid).

11. Visit a viewpoint

Children love exploring sights from the top! Madrid is full of amazing viewpoints and we´ve already mentioned the Moncloa viewpoint. If your hotel has no viewpoint on its rooftop, you can choose any hotel which does, and for an average of 5€ you should be able to visit it and have a tapa or drink there. The best ones are located in the Gran Vía Avenue. Hotel Riu may own the best viewpoint of the city (be ready to queue) mainly thanks to its crystal-floored section which is a very exciting attraction for both children and adults. Another good option just next to it is the Dear Hotel viewpoint- less crowded and almost the same view.

There are also viewpoints which are located on emblematic buildings:

La Terraza del Circulo de Bellas Artes: A mythical place on the other end of Gran vía. This historical “art center” has a lovely viewpoint, which you can visit ‘for free’ if you book a table at its restaurant.

Almudena: This Cathedral is located next to the Royal Palace and it offers stunning views. In this monument the viewpoint should be booked in advance on the Cathedral’s webpage.

12. Visit the Santiago Bernabeu football Stadium

There are 3 ways to visit Madrid’s legendary Real Madrid Stadium. You can either have breakfast in the stadium’s coffee place with amazing views over the stadium (for just a few coins) or you can visit its museum (it’s one of the priciest in the city) and buy a personalized Real Madrid soccer T-shirt with your kids name on it. But how about going to an actual football game? For many families this is one of the most amazing things to do in Madrid with kids.

13. Visit a children theater in Madrid

There is a small alternative theater in Madrid center, called La Escalera de Jacob which organizes shows for all ages and many of them are for children. You don´t have to worry about the Spanish language as there are many representations for the smallest ones that do not require any language, along with magic shows. It is an excellent activity in Madrid for kids.

14. Visit an amusement park

For many families the best thing to do in Madrid with children is to visit one of its amusement parks. These are the most popular ones:

Parque de Atracciones:

This is the official amusement park of the city. It is quite small so it is easy to have fun there for a few hours. For some people this park might be too “retro” as many of the attractions were built a long time ago. It has an area called Nickelodeon with lot of things to do for our littlest ones. It is easy to reach by metro but why not use the cable car?

To avoid lines get your tickets online.

Warner park:

This park is more recent than the first one and it is full of nice rides and there are plenty of activities to do. It is recommended to get a ‘fast ticket’ to avoid long queues. It is a 30-minute drive from Madrid and you can also get there by public transport.

Aquopolis Water Park:

There are two of them in Madrid so you can go to the one closer to your location but both are in the outskirts (reachable by public transport). These are not particularly big parks but they have different slides, a wave pool, the lazy river and a small beach pool with sand. During the warmer days, holidays or weekends, do expect a long queue (sometimes up to an hour for a slide).

15. Take a Segway or bike tour

There are many companies offering Segway tours in Madrid. Unfortunately, most of them do not allow children under 12 years old. However, this is still a fun way for teens to discover the city. Madrid Expert can organize a private e-bike tour for your whole family which can be one of the best things to do in Madrid for kids.

Toledo is a must if you are in Madrid and kids do really enjoy discovering this ancient city.

If you are travelling with children, we highly recommend its amazing Cathedral, the small city train to the viewpoint, a tour to see the city under the ground, the old Synagogue, seeking David’s star, try the typical marzipan in one of its cafés or crossing the Tagus river and the best things to do in Toledo for kids is to take the zipline.

Make the most of your time in Madrid by creating unforgettable memories with your kids, enjoying educational, entertaining, and fun activities throughout your vacation.

12 typical Spanish drinks you should try

We are sure that you already know what the most typical Spanish food is, but what about the drink in Spain?

Spain offers a wide variety of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages (bebida in Spanish) and you can try them almost everywhere in the country. Imagine locals enjoying a drink at their own special time of day, similar to tea time in England. Let´s take a journey through the 12 most famous Spanish drinks.

1. Wine

Even Spain is the third largest wine producer and one of the oldest traditional winemaking countries in the world, for some unknown reason it is one of the least understood. Even wine lovers might feel hopelessly lost and unsure where to start. There is an incredibly wide range of delicious wines produced in this country:

White wines, rosés, young and aged reds, sparkling and sweet wines, sherries and traditional wines.

In a typical Spanish restaurant, it is normal to order wine calling it by the area where it comes from (like Rioja region, Ribera del Duero etc.) You can definitely ask the bar or restaurant´s waiter to help you make your choice.

Price: An average price for a glass of wine is 3€ (Exactly! Wine in Spain is cheap and tasty.)

Where to try it: In any bar, winery, café or restaurant. (We love the Fisna in Madrid and ElDiset in Barcelona)

2. Orange juice

Probably many of us associate Spain with oranges. These bright, sweet and juicy pieces of fruit are a perfect blend of vitamins and minerals. It is a must to have it for your breakfast. The best part is that it is available all year long (though the best period of the year is from October to April).

Price: An average price for a glass of fresh orange juice is 2-3€

Where to try it: In any bar or café, or you can make your own fresh squeezed orange juice at any supermarket.

3. Sangría or Tinto de verano

And yes, for some others, Spain is associated with sangría. This alcoholic drink is one of the symbols of the country. It contains three main ingredients: wine, soda and fresh fruit, but there may be a slight variation of this fresh cocktail in each place. This was the only Spanish drink that entered the CNN´s list of 50 best drinks in the world. The word sangria comes from the Spanish word “sangre”- blood, referring to its red colour. A simpler version of sangria is called Tinto de Verano (summer drink) which doesn’t contain any fruit (only wine and soda). Locals usually order tinto de verano rather than sangria.

Price: 3€

Where to try it: Inany bar or café (we love Las Cuevas de Sésamo in Madrid and Cachitos in Barcelona) you can also get a bottled sangria (don´t expect great quality) in any supermarket for 2€.

4. Sidra

This light alcoholic drink is a great alternative Spanish drink to wine or beer, some say it is more of a fermented apple juice. Its homeland is Asturias and the Basque Country in the North of Spain. According to the tradition, sidra should be poured in the correct way: the waiter lowers one hand with a glass, and lifts the other with a bottle of wine up, and thus fills up the glass, creating pleasant air bubbles in the drink. It is a really fun experience to try!

Price: 5€ a bottle

Where to try it: In most bars, though the best and most typical places to try it are the Asturian restaurants or Sidrerías. These places are in almost every Spanish town. We love Couzapín in Madrid and El Chigre in Barcelona.

5. Beer

This popular drink is usually associated with British, German or Belgian cultures, but in fact, Spain is the fourth producer of beer in Europe! It is very important for the local social life to have a beer with friends or family at least once a week. However, it can be tricky to say the right size of the desired drink even for Spanish, as in different parts of the country portions have different names. In Madrid and the majority of regions if you ask for a small glass of pressure beer in a bar you should ask for a “caña” and if you could do with a big one then order a “doble”. If you prefer to have a bottled beer you ask for a “botellin” if it is small and a “tercio” if you fancy a bigger bottle. These are the best considered Spanish cervezas:

Alhambra Reserva, Damm Inedit, Mahou Cinco Estrellas, Ambar, San Miguel 1516, Estrella Galicia 1906.

6. Agua de Valencia

The Valencian water is probably the second most popular cocktail in Spain. This Spanish drink is more typical in the Northern part of the country and logically in the town of Valencia. Its main ingredients are: fresh orange juice, cava (Champaign), Gin, Vodka and ice with slight variations.

7. Cava

Cava is the most famous Spanish sparkling wine and the pride of any winemaker. Only a few regions are allowed to produce Cava. In fact the 95% of the country´s sparkling wine is produced in Catalonia (Penedès region). You can classify it by color, variety of grape, region and aging (9-month aging Cava and 2,5 age Cava Gran Reserva).

Price per bottle: From 15€ in a supermarket and 25€ in a restaurant

Where to try it: We love Entrevinos in Madrid and of course the incredible wineries (caveries) close to Barcelona like Bodegas Freixenet, Agusti Torrelló or Codorniu.

8. Vermouth

Never call it a Martini! This Spanish alcoholic drink called Vermouth is very popular in the country especially in Barcelona (The city of Reus is not only Gaudi´s but also the vermouths’ hometown) as well as in Madrid. There is a well-known expression: See you at the time of vermouth (a la hora del vermú). It means that traditionally this drink is taken on Sundays before lunch with friends or family. It should be fresh with a slice of orange and it is also typical to accompany this bitter drink with olives or some savoury tapas. What distinguishes Spanish vermouth from the Italian one is the complexity and quality of its aroma.

Price: Bottle in a supermarket (around 10€/bottle) in a bar 2€/glass

Where to try it: In Madrid (Bodega de la Ardosa, Gran Clavel, El Viejo rey de los vinos)

Barcelona: La Plata, Bodega Marín

9. Hot Chocolate

Did you know that the first European to try hot chocolate was a Spanish man? In fact, it is said that it was Hernan Cortez. Anyhow, the Spanish brought the cocoa beans to Europe and even today, it is considered that Spain offers one of the best hot chocolate. It is served with churros (donut-like dessert) and the best time to try it is in winter/autumn at around 5pm, just after siesta. Try it with churros!

Where to try it: The oldest chocolatery is located in Madrid and it is called San Gines.

Price: 3€/cup

10. Orujo

Orujo is a Spanish distilled spirit made of residue of wine production. Sometimes this liqueur is aged with herbs which is then called Orujo de hierbas. It is normally enjoyed after a meal and in many restaurants, it is offered for free after lunch. Some people believe it tastes very similar to Grappa (they are actually made almost the same way). Another popular version of orujo is called crema de orujo, very similar to Baileys. It is a mixture of orujo, coffee, caramel, sugar and milk.

Price: Bottle in a supermarket (around 10€/bottle) in a bar 2€/glass

Where to try it: Anywhere (bars and restaurants)

11. Horchata

Horchata is a very popular Spanish non-alcoholic summer drink. You can try it anywhere in Spain, normally in an ice-cream shop. It originally comes from Valencia, where there are even places which specialize in horchata ( horchaterías) as well as street stalls. Even though it looks like milk , it is not a dairy product as it is made of tigernuts (chufa), sugar and water. It is typical to dip a sweet pastry in it (farton).

Price: 3€/glass

Where to try it: In Madrid in one of the ice cream place from a chain called Alboraya, in Barcelona at La Valenciana or at Tío Che

12. Queimada

Last but not least of our 12 best Spanish drinks is an enchanted drink. If you believe in magic and you drink Queimada, which is typical of the Galicia region, you will get rid all of the negative vibes. Queimada literally means a burning drink as it is served on flames. Its main ingredients are: sugar, lemon, orange zest and coffee beans. All of this added to a pot and then it is set on fire. It is even better if it is prepared by a witch so she can cast a spell to protect you from evil spirits.

Where to try it: Normally only available in Galician restaurants (they are all around the country)

We hope you enjoyed our 12 best and typical Spanish drink list and that you got thirsty enough to get to try them all during your stay in Spain.

Looking for things to do alone in Madrid?

If you are travelling alone in Madrid, for example, if you are on a business trip or you have just decided to take some time for yourself, we want you to make the most of your time. Here are 10 wonderful activities for those travelling solo, although doing them accompanied may also be an option. Here we go!

Best things to do in Madrid when you are alone.

1. Sunset from a local garden followed by a Manzanilla with Mojama (What on earth is this?)

One of the best things you can do in Madrid when traveling alone is to get to the small gardens (visited mainly by locals) of the San Francisco Basilica called ‘la Dalieda de San Francisco’. Where once stood the convent, it is today a lovely garden with flowers, which is also connected to a park. From there you can admire the dome of the church (one of the biggest domes of Christianity) and why not watch one of the most stunning sunsets of Madrid.

Also, after the sunset, explore the surroundings within the authentic neighborhood of La Latina, and don’t be shy – have a drink in a bar where locals meet every evening.

We are particularly fond of one bar called Taberna de San Lúcar, which is characterized by a traditional Spanish atmosphere, influenced by the Andalusian culture. If you fancy some typical wine called Manzanilla (a variety of Spanish fino sherry) with a portion of dried tuna (mojama), popular in the Spanish cuisine and considered a delicacy, this is the place to be! The mojama, normally thinly sliced, makes a tasty tapa. In Madrid, it usually comes with toasted almonds and served in the afternoon, along with wine and olives.

2. Rent a bike in Madrid

Another really fun thing to do in Madrid for solo travelers is to rent a bike. Cycling in Madrid is convenient if you use the cycle lanes or if you opt for a wander in one of its wonderful parks such as the Retiro. If you wish to go on a longer journey, we really recommend you Casa de Campo or Madrid Río parks. You can find all these itineraries in a bike rental office (we love Trixi for its high-quality bikes).

Renting a bike will cost you about 15€/day but you can also rent one per hour. Most places let normal as well as electric bikes. As Madrid is a bit hilly all you need are good legs and a bottle of water!

3. Eat a calamari sándwich at Plaza Mayor

Eating a delicious ‘bocadillo de calamares’ (calamari sandwich) on Plaza Mayor is as important as eating a waffle in Brussels or a bagel in New York. It is a tradition which dates back to the 16th century. The recipe is very simple as it is only composed of bread and calamari. The average price for a sandwich and a beer is 7€. You will see many other travelers eating their sandwich alone.

As they are very popular, you will find
them in almost every bar and restaurant in the surroundings of the emblematic
square, but here’s a list of our favourite spots:

Los Galayos. Calle Botoneras, nº5.

La Ideal. Calle Botoneras, 4, 28012

La Campana. Calle Botoneras, 6

Casa María. Plaza Mayor 23

If you are interested in more traditional food and bars please check our The 5 best traditional bars in Madrid.

4. Watch a movie in an art Cinema

If you feel tired after sightseeing, it can be nice just to pop in a cinema and relax for a bit. It is also a typical thing to do if you are travelling alone in Madrid. There are some art-cinemas where you can watch a movie with Spanish subtitles and original language. The most popular area for this activity is probably the area of Plaza de España. There are two art-cinemas on Martín de Los Heros street; Cines Golem Madrid and Renoir Plaza España. If you are a solo traveler in Madrid, you should know that it is not uncommon in the Spanish culture to sit alone in a cinema.

Finally, afer the film, you can walk to the nearby Conde Duque area to have dinner in one of its small and cozy restaurants.

5. Go shopping for a vintage

Everybody knows that Madrid is paradise for shopping lovers, and that there are different neighbourhoods for different kinds of shopping.

However, if you would like to see and stroll through unique, original and beautiful shops, where you can just go in, take a picture or have a coffee (yes, these stores often have a double life being a shop in the morning, a café in the afternoon and bar in the evening), here are our 3 favourites:

Pinkoco shop

This is one of these lovely boutiques
with a double life. On one hand they sell organic cosmetics and decoration
products and on the other hand it is an exotic Mediterranean styled bar. And
all this in the heart of Madrid.

Real Fabrica Española

A wonderful boutique where you can find
these traditional Spanish products everyone remembers in Spain (today
considered vintage) because they’ve seen or tasted them in their grandmother’s
village, but of course, here, they are new and a bit redesigned.

Rocío, the owner, has a very important
task, which is to recuperate the old Spanish traditions. Absolutely recommended!

Ad Hoc

A great and lovely mix of a florist and a jewelry boutique where you can find young Spanish designer’s products at reasonable prices.

These are only some ideas as you have
more than 30 similar stores all around Madrid.

6. Take a private tour in Madrid

The best way to have a quick overview of what Madrid is about is to take a private tour where your guide can tell you everything you are interested in as well as adapt the tour to your tastes and interests. There are many different tours but a simple and tailor-made walking tour is a great way to explore the city and learn how fun Madrid can be as a solo traveller.

7. Visit a classical or a fun Museum

If you are a solo traveler in Madrid probably you will end up visiting one of its museums. Here are some of them:

Big art museums: The Prado Museum (classical art), Reina Sofia (modern art), Thyssen Museum (classical and modern art)

Fun and interactive small museums: Ikono gallery, Museum of illusions

History and science: National Archaeological Museum, Museum of Natural Sciences

Hidden palace like museums: Museo Cerralbo, Museo Sorolla, Museo Lazaro Galeano

8. Read a book at the Retiro park

The Retiro park in the center of Madrid is a wonderful place where you can just go for a walk, see the Crystal Palace, admire its fountains or simply visit its library. Yes, there is a library in the middle of the Retiro park! What is unique about this park is that it used to be a zoo until 1972 called “The House of the beasts”. It was then partially turned into some nice gardens you can still see today, and the library was opened in one of the zoo’s buildings. You can also find books in foreign languages there.

If you are more into old bookshops, on the other side of the Retiro park on Cuesta Moyano street, you can find an old book market which has been running for about 100 years and which is open almost every day of the year. There are books in Spanish but also in English and French.

9. Madrid’s History Museum

If you are of those who are interested in Madrid ́s history in details, then you can visit Madrid ́s History Museum in Tribunal. In fact, there are 2 museums about Madrid’s history but this specific one tells the history of Madrid starting back from when it became the capital of Spain in 1561. The building itself is a really good example of Madrid’s baroque architecture and used to be one of the hospices for homeless people and orphans.

Inside, throughout your visit, you will become familiar with the city’s industry, artworks and traditions from the 16th century until nowadays. It also houses some of Goya and other Spanish painter´s masterpieces. And the entry is free!

10. Day trip from Madrid

If you want to have a break from the capital’s rhythm, you can travel from Madrid to one of its surrounding historical cities.

If you’re looking for the best things to do in Madrid on your own-heading to one of these small cities is a great way to escape from the crowds of the city, learn some history, try the local pastry and get the opportunity to take some cool ‘Instagramable’ pictures of the surroundings of Madrid.

Here you will find the most popular destinations for tours from Madrid. You can get to these places easily by public transport or with a private tour from Madrid.

Here you can read our Best places to visit outside Madrid.

11. Watch an authentic football game in Madrid

And last but not least, and definitely one of the top things to do in Madrid when you are traveling alone is to experience a Rayo Vallecano football game. Normally a must-see in Madrid is a football game, but people usually go to the more famous Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid game. If you really would like to experience a truly local atmosphere, this will be one of your best memories in Madrid.

This team, founded in 1924, is also based in Madrid and is not in the first but in the second division. Its stadium is located almost in the city center. It is easy to get there and to get tickets for a football game. It is cheap and you will really see and feel the local passion for football, watching families and groups of friends going to this event and singing together.

12. Go out in Madrid

Madrid is a city where you can go out anytime of the year, you will always find popular bars full of people as well as nightclubs which are all very different depending on the district.

In Madrid there are dozen of bars which are very special.

Why?

Because they have been open without interruption for more than 100 years. They are called “The Centenarian Restaurants and Taverns”. In these places you can immerse yourself in history as they have maintained their traditions, service, value, gastronomy and atmosphere throughout all these years. If you are in Madrid you cannot miss visiting any of these places as they have sept the old capital´s spirit.
When you find yourself in one of these bars you can easily recognise it as there is a golden plaque just outside the entrance (see below).

The 5 Best Local Bars in Madrid (Spain)

1. Casa Alberto

Casa Alberto was opened in 1827 , which makes it one of the oldest taverns in Madrid.
The place kept its original decoration such as the zinc counter and the furniture.

What to eat here?

Their top dish is the oxtail stew (Rabo de Toro) which is cooked the exact same way as it used to be 150 years ago. We recommend you accompany it with their home made Vermuth.

2. Casa Ciriaco

Casa Ciriaco is located in the heart of Madrid and was opened in 1887.
It is well known all across Spain because of the unpleasant event that took place here, on King Alfonso XIII’ s wedding day, in 1906. An anarchist threw a bomb from the top of this very building, but the king and the queen could survive it.

What to eat here?

Pepitoria de Gallina which is a 100 years old recipe (chicken slowly cooked in wine with saffron and almonds) with a glass of Ribera del Duero red wine.

3. Casa Labra

Centrally located Casa Labra is just behind the main square Sol. This is one of the most popular bars in Madrid.
It was founded in 1860 and it is famous because this is where the Spanish Socialist workers Party was created. It is usually busy during lunchtime and dinner time, and it is very common to share your table with other costumers, as, sometimes there are just too many people. There is no better way to say a few words to some locals and maybe brush up on your Spanish!

What to eat here?

Its famous codfish croquette (croqueta de Bacalao) with a cold beer or a vermuth.

4. Lhardy

It is rather a restaurant but we have decided to list it here because of its importance in Madrid. If you wish to step back in time, we recommend you have lunch in Lhardy considering it is one of the first restaurants in Spain that was founded specially for Madrid´s noble people´s refined taste. It was opened in 1839 during the Romantic period and it was visited by Madrid´s most important politicians, aristocracy as well as the kings . You will be able to have a luxurious lunch or dinner in one of its original and beautiful dining rooms such as the Sala Isabelina or the Japonese Salon.

What to eat here?

Madrid style chickpea stew with a glass of Rueda wine.

5. Taberna Antonio Sanchez

It was opened in 1786 in the Lavapies neighbourhood and until today it has mantained its original decoration such as the old gas lamp or the elevator which was used to bring bottles from the cellar directly to the bar.

The owners have always been into bullfighting (Antonio Sanchez being himself a bullfighter, was the one who decided to open this bar). In fact, you will be able to see paintings of bulls and pictures and famous ‘toreadors’ on the walls.

What to eat here?

Madrid´s traditional dishes such as the Callos (Madrid’s style tripe) or the popular tortilla de San Isidro (omelett).

However, note that its most famous dish is la Torrija (a dessert made of slices of bread soaked in milk) which is available only in Easter time and days before this feast.

The year of 2019 will be an incredible year for Spanish cultural life as the Prado Museum in Madrid will celebrate its 200th anniversary.

The Museum was open in 1819 by the king Ferdinand the 7th as The Royal Museum of Paintings and Sculptures. At the beginning there were only 311 paintings, but today there are more than 7000 paintings and thousands of sculptures, drawings and other documents.

This museum houses the biggest collection of Spanish art in the world with canvases of painters like Velazquez, El Greco or Goya. It has also one of the best collections of Flemish art and actually the biggest number of Hieronymus Bosch´s panels n the world.

2019 will be a perfect year to visit Madrid as during the whole year there will be many temporary exhibitions in the Prado Museum but also hundreds of guided tours, conferences, performances and concerts.

Soon the Prado Museum will publish all the events here.

We are very excited about the Prado´s bicentenary programs and we are also preparing some special private tours in the Prado Museum to be able to understand its role in the history of art.
